Discovery Green®, downtown Houston’s iconic 12-acre park, hires an internationally acclaimed landscaping and garden care company, Huatan Landscaping, LLC, to care for its gardens, lawns and trees.

Founded in Mexico City, for over 15 years Huatan’s more than 1500 employees have overseen the design, installation, and green care of most of the city’s government buildings, central parks, boulevards, restaurants, office buildings and some of the area’s elite custom homes. Huatan brings to Discovery Green a global perspective that will appeal to locals and international visitors alike.

Huatan is an innovator in the industry winning numerous awards for design and excellence from local and international associations and publications.  The owner, Daniel Gomez-Bilbao, has been featured in Forbes Mexico magazine for his entrepreneurial leadership.  Huatan's most recently received the 2024 Global Excellence Award for Garden & Green Space Design Company of the Year 2024 – USA & Mexico.

The park, located directly across from the Houston’s George R. Brown convention center is the focal point for major downtown events and attracts more than 2 million visits a year. Discovery Green’s popularity and the over 500 free events a year it presents means the grounds require a high level of care to keep the green space looking its best. With Huatan the park will be manicured and pampered to bring out the best its vegetation has to offer.  Working together with Clark Curry, Discovery Green’s director of operations, Huatan will see that the park receives enhancements with new plant design and water conservation strategies.

“Discovery Green is a much-loved gathering place for Houstonians. For visitors to Houston, the park serves an introduction to the city’s diverse artistic and cultural talents,” said Discovery Green President Kathryn Lott. “We are excited to work with Huatan to care for Discovery Green’s uncommonly beautiful green space.”

Huatan has other properties in downtown Houston that it also maintains.  It provides much of its plant material from a 16-acre nursery, Huatan Gardens, it owns located in upper north Harris County.  It maintains hubs of operations in The Woodlands, Humble, Pearland and Cypress, and San Antonio, allowing us to efficiently serve Houston, its surrounding areas, and the San Antonio region.  Huatan operates locally with over 150 employees and staff and has its USA operations headquartered in The Woodlands, TX.  It has been in business locally since 2020.

“The immediate plan for Huatan is one of growth” says Sergio Grado, Regional Director of Business Development.  “We purchased the nursery at the end of July this year to help us achieve that goal”, says Grado.  Having the nursery allows Huatan to source their own plants and maintain competitive pricing.  This is accomplished through growing its own plants and at times, importing them from Mexico.

There are more announcements coming as Huatan continues to ramp up its operations and presence in Texas.  For now, the focus is will be on Discovery Green.  “We want to showcase what we can do as landscapers and gardeners”, says Sergio Grado.  Soon, all will know why Huatan, pronounced ‘Wa-Tahn’ is “a different green”.
