10th Annual Iron Sommelier
Periwinkle is proud to host the 10th Anniversary Iron Sommelier, presented by AUTOSOL, on Thursday, November 9, 2017 at The Houstonian Hotel. Houston’s top sommeliers will share their expertise and wine selections with over 600 attendees.
At Iron Sommelier, Houston’s premier wine competition and tasting, the city’s most prestigious sommeliers compete for the title of Iron Sommelier. Each sommelier selects three wines that focus on a particular wine region, grape or style and personally presents the wines they are pouring, while conversing with guests as they taste and compare. Underwriters are invited to the VIP Tasting Rooms where each sommelier presents a select wine in a small intimate setting. Professional judges award the title of Iron Sommelier at the end of the evening while guests vote for the People’s Choice Award.

The result is a full-bodied and savory red with structured acidity and mineral-driven length. El Enemigo Cabernet Franc The grapes for this powerful red are sourced from Gualtallary, Mendoza at elevations over 4,500 feet. Cabernet Franc grown in deep, calcareous, rocky soils high in calcium carbonate result in this zesty red with chalky, fresh minerality with a backbone of free flowing acidity. Les Cadrans de Lassegue Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon make up this blend with the vines averaging between 40 and 50 years old. Located on the hillside in line with Côte de Saint-Emilion, the vines grow in chalky clay and limestone soils resulting in this refined and elegant wine with round, silky tannins. Gosset Champagne Brut Excellence Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier all combine here to complete the trifecta of Champagne grapes. With a limestone dominate soil mixed with clay, chalk and marl, each grape variety produces its best expression resulting in a rich and rounded mouthfeel that also expresses a firm, flinty minerality. Mathilde Chapoutier “Grand Ferrage” Rose Grenache Noir, Syrah, Cinsault, Cabernet Sauvignon, Rolle and Clairette grown in predominantly clay and limestone soils. The result is a full and seamless entry to the palate, grippy acidity, and a round and silky mouthfeel. Nostre Pais Blanc 2 Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, Clairette, Viognier and Bourboulenc. “Galets” on iron-rich clay, along with limestone on beds of chalk make up the terroir. The resulting wine is elegant, pure and mineral with a long, soft mouth-filling finish. Wine Cases must be pre-ordered and will be available at the Wine Case Pick Up Party.
