Lone Star College-Montgomery Hunger Banquet
Take a seat at Lone Star College-Montgomery's Hunger Banquet where the meal you eat is determined by the luck of the draw, just like real life where some are born into prosperity and others into poverty. The event on Tuesday, April 19 at 6:30 p.m. in the Commons Building (building A) will help raise awareness of global hunger and poverty issues. Attendees are asked to donate $3 or three canned goods, which will be donated to the LSC-Montgomery Food Pantry. We're very excited to bring this event to LSC-Montgomery, said Dana Morales LSC-Montgomery civic engagement co-coordinator. The theme of civic engagement this year has been inequality and how it plays out politically, socially and emotionally. Educating people and raising awareness about inequality is the first step to helping people understand how hunger and poverty are connected. The event is an interactive experience that helps guests understand the reality of hunger. Participants will draw tickets at random that assign them to a high-, middle-, or low-income tier. Each income level receives a corresponding meal. The high-income guests are served a sumptuous meal; the middle-income guests eat a simple meal of rice and beans; and the low-income guests help themselves to small portions of rice and water. Michele Richey, LSC-Montgomery professor of sociology, will also be on hand to talk about the sociology of hunger. Not all of us are born with the same opportunities, through this event we hope to educate students, staff and the community by persuading our audience to help those in need, said Stacey Hewitt, LSC-Montgomery program manager, public relations. Hunger affects not only those who are hungry, but all of us as well. The Hunger Banquet is one of many civic-minded events developed by the Center for Civic Engagement. To combat hunger facing students and employees at LSC-Montgomery, the college and the Montgomery County Food Bank have an on-campus food pantry, the first of its kind for a community college in the Houston area.
