SUMMARY:Soil: Your Ultimate Water Reservoir – Tapping the Potential
DESCRIPTION:The Woodlands G.R.E.E.N. is presenting a Sustainability Lecture entitled "Soil: Your Ultimate Water Reservoir Tapping the Potential". Mr. John Ferguson\, award-winning Soil Scientist\, will be the speaker. The public is welcome and there is no charge. We will learn water conservation\, plus how to create a greener\, healthier landscape. ? Landscaping irrigation in our area accounts for more than 50% of the drinking water that we use during the growing season. The effective application of modern soil science\, however\, can drastically reduce this demand. Increasing a soil's organic matter by a mere 3% allows an acre of that soil to store about 120\,000 gallons of water within its top 18 inches. Individuals who integrate basic soil fundamentals into their landscaping experience better results\, a thicker\, greener lawn and healthier shrubs and flowers\, with lower installation and maintenance costs. ? The speaker\, Mr. John Ferguson\, has over 40 years of business experience. He founded and owns Natural Waste Solutions\, dba Nature's Way Resources\, a Houston-based recycling company that specializes producing high-quality compost\, mulch and soil mixes. He holds a M.S. degree in Physics and Geology and is a licensed Soil Scientist in Texas. John has won many awards in horticulture and environmental issues and has represented the composting industry on the Houston-Galveston Area Council for solid waste for over 17 years. ? Those who attend will also enjoy learning about the many "green" features of HARC's new building\, currently the only LEED Platinum facility in the Woodlands\, with energy saving solar and geothermal systems along with many other extensive low impact development features. ? This event is free and open to the public. Coffee and cookies provided.
